The first SMS in history is up for auction

Post by asimd17 »

Vodafone will auction off the first SMS message in history, and will put it up for bid as a 'non-fungible token' (NFT), the British operator announced in a statement on Tuesday.

The message was transmitted over the Vodafone network on 3 December 1992 and received by Vodafone employee Richard Jarvis at a Christmas party. It is a text that reads "Merry Christmas".

The SMS will be auctioned online in a one-off sale organised by Aguttes Auction House in France at the firm's Christmas auction.

The buyer will be able to pay with the Ether cryptocurrency, and will obtain exclusive ownership of a detailed and unique replica of the original communication protocol that transmitted the world's first SMS.

Vodafone will donate the proceeds from mom data the sale to UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. “The mother of all messaging services is up for auction. In this way, we are uniting the pioneering spirit of two centuries. We are immortalizing the world’s first SMS on the blockchain and auctioning it off as an NFT for a good cause,” said Vodafone Spain CEO Colman Deegan. “Technology pioneers can change the world, when they serve and connect people,” he added.
