The objective of reducing accidents
Road safety is a constant priority in Spain, especially in a context where the population is progressively ageing. The Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) has announced significant changes to the process of renewing driving licenses for senior citizens, with the aim of ensuring that all road users maintain the necessary skills for safe driving .

This year, drivers over 65 will have to undergo more rigorous medical examinations when renewing their driving licence. These evaluations will include vision, hearing, motor coordination and cognitive tests , aimed at detecting any impairment that may affect the ability to drive safely.

In addition, the Traffic Department has established a list of 35 illnesses that are considered incompatible with driving, including neurological, cardiovascular and mental conditions.

Renewal deadlines
According to the DGT , drivers over 65 years of age who have car, motorcycle and motorbike licences (AM, A1, A2, A, B) and driving licences must renew their driving licence every five years . This period is reduced for professional bus and truck licences (C, C1, D, D1, EC, EC1, ED, ED1...).

The measure seeks to monitor the health of these drivers more frequently in order to prevent accidents resulting from physical or cognitive impairments that are not detected in time.

In cases where medical assessments determine a significant risk, the DGT will have the power to refuse to renew the driving licence . This decision will be supported by medical reports and will only apply in situations where the driver's abilities may represent a danger to his or her safety and that of other road users.

A simplified procedure
Drivers over 65 years of age can renew their driving licence at authorised Drivers' Recognition Centres . These centres will be responsible for both the necessary medical assessments and the administrative processing of the licence.

Testing will include vision, hearing and cognitive tests, ensuring drivers meet the minimum requirements to remain behind the wheel safely.
