What Does Social Media Data Tell Us?
Today, social media is an indispensable part of almost everyone’s daily life. More than 97% of working-age internet users log in to social networks or messaging platforms every month. From here, we can understand how powerful an impact social media has. Chat and messaging applications appeal to a wide audience, especially from young people to adults, among people of different age groups. In fact, nearly nine out of ten internet users between the ages of 16 and 64 have used at least one of these platforms in the last 30 days. The popularity of social networks is also striking; 94.3% of the same age group stated that they accessed one of these services in the last month.

For What Purposes Is Social Media Used Most?
In a comprehensive survey conducted by GWI, almost 61% of participants say that the most important reason they go online is to “find information.” In an era when accessing information is so easy, we can all learn anything we are curious about with just a few clicks. However, “staying in touch with friends and family” is also a very important motivation. 56.6% of participants identify the need to strengthen these social ties as the primary reason they use the internet.

We understand that social media is not only a source of information, but also an emotional support area. Today, social media is not only a function of keeping in touch with our friends, but also a platform that entertains us, makes us think and introduces us to different worlds. This is one of the important conclusions of the report. The rise of dynamic and entertaining platforms such as TikTok further expands the dimension of entertainment within social media networks. Social media is now overflowing with our instant sharing, dance videos, interesting content and funny anecdotes.

The data above is actually a reflection of what we've been talking about. You can see which social media platforms internet users use the most. According to the data, if we look at the top 3, people use social media;

49.5% to stay in touch with friends and family,
38.5% to fill their free time,
34.2% use it to follow news and current affairs.

Among the social media platforms that are so widely used and where users spend a lot of their time, regardless of the reason, the ones that they prefer the most are as above. According to global data, people use Instagram the most with 16.5%, WhatsApp at an equal rate, and Facebook at 12.8%. Today's popular platform TikTok is in 5th place on the list with 7.4%.

Above you can see the percentage of active social media users by country. According to the data, 77.3% of the population in Turkey actively uses social media. The highest rate is in the Philippines and China with its dense population.

Our TV Watching Habits Are Changing: The Power of the Internet
The increase in the time spent online by internet users each day actually reflects the decrease in time spent watching television. According to the latest data from GWI for the third quarter of 2023, the typical internet user now spends 17 minutes less per day watching TV than last year. Digital series and film platforms also play a role in this decrease, of course. The decrease amounts to an 8.2% annual decrease in total.
