My first job at an advertising agency wasn't as a copywriter

Post by nusaibatara »

I got the job – not as a copywriter or copywriter, as it’s sometimes called, but as a creative account manager. It was a great title for a job that was really pure new customer acquisition. That is, sales.

In this job, I noticed that cold calling worked almost as poorly as cold door-to-door sales.

Somehow I ended greece phone number data up searching for information about sales letters and direct marketing. I saw a result on Google that caught my attention:

“Drayton Bird knows more about direct marketing than anyone in the world. His books on the subject are worth their weight in gold.” –David Ogilvy

If my idol praised him so highly, it had to be good!

And that was it. I read Drayton Bird's bestselling books Commonsense Direct & Digital Marketing and How to Write Sales Letters That Sell . I began to realize how wrong I had been at sales and marketing – not to mention how bad the advertising the agency's clients were getting. No mention of selling, measuring results and testing. Just guesswork, feeling and questionable opinions.

The more I got to know this exciting new world, the more I began to despise all the crap that is sold to advertisers as good advertising – without any evidence of its return.
